When it comes to ETF tickers, the more memorable the ticker symbol, the more likely investors will remember the fund—no small challenge considering more than 1,300 ETFs are now listed in the United States, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.

The challenge to come up a catchy ticker is evident in the fact that firms have reserved close to 2,446 symbols for future products, the article said.

Also, many firms refuse to take tickers of dead ETFs, as the association of failure may lead to firms not using the funds, the Journal said.

Catchy as some symbols may be, that doesn’t guarantee an ETF’s success, the article said. For example, the Global X Farming Fund (NYSEArca: BARN), introduced last year, is set to close by the end of this month, according to the article.
