The month of April saw a collective 21 ETFs—from BGI, Vanguard, Van Eck, Victoria Bay, XShares and Claymore— enter the market, nudging the total ETFs available to US investors to 475. According to State Street Global Advisors, designers of the SPDRs family, the ETF market hit $461 billion, representing an increase of about 5% over the month previous.

ETFs attracting the most assets were once again those with international exposure, which, as a group, grew by $8 billion for the month. The iShares EAFE grew the most, adding some $3 billion and returning 8.7% year to date. Eight of the top 10 performing ETFs for the four months ending April provide ex-US exposure, either country specific, regional, or sector. The outperformers for the period were the Market Vectors Steel (SLX) and SPDR Metals & Mining (XME), both of which reflect the current robust metals industry, returning 27.9% and 26.9% respectively.
