CBOE’s August Volumes Mixed The Chicago Board Options Exchange had its best August ever in terms of volume, with 92.9 million contracts traded during the month for an average daily volume of 4.4 million contracts. That’s a 2 percent increase from July’s ADV and a 5 percent increase from August 2008. However, the picture wasn’t so rosy for index and ETF options. The ADV for cash-settled index options was down 6 percent year-over-year, while the ADV for ETF options fell a whopping 16 percent. Of those index and ETF options, the most actively traded contracts were those on the S&P 500 Index, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE Arca: SPY), the PowerShares QQQ Trust (Nasdaq GM: QQQQ), the CBOE Volatility Index and the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (NYSE Arca: IWM), but even a couple of those contracts saw declines in volume from the previous August. All other index and ETF options outside the top five saw double-digit volume declines from August 2008. |
