CBOE February Volumes Flat With Last Year
The CBOE saw an average daily volume of 4.2 million contracts in February 2010, pretty much flat with last year’s volume. Index options saw their ADV increase by an impressive 35 percent, however. The ADV for ETF options fell by 6 percent.

Options on the S&P 500, the SPDR S&P 500, the VIX, the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund and the PowerShares QQQQ were the most actively traded index or ETF contracts for the month of February. In particular, the VIX contracts had their most active month ever, with a total volume traded of 4.8 million contracts—a 300 percent increase from the 1.2 million contracts traded in February 2009.

Year-to-date through the end of February, ADV on index options was up 35 percent from the previous year, while ETF options remained flat with the previous year.
