July 17, 2012
|
The PowerShares KBW Bank Portfolio (NYSEArca: KBWB) was one of the best-performing ETFs Monday, July 16, gaining 3.29 percent on the heels of solid bank earnings reports. Other financial sector ETFs such as the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Financial Services Index Fund (NYSEArca: IYG) and the Focus Morningstar Financial Services ETF (NYSEArca: FFL) were also among the top performers Monday, with gains of 3.15 percent and 2.78 percent, respectively. The upward momentum in financials came despite relative weakness in the broad stock market, which gave in to renewed concerns over global economic growth. The Dow Jones industrial average shed 49.88 points, or 0.4 percent, to end the day at 12,727.21. On the flip side, a roster of VIX-related funds led the bottom-performers list, with the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSEArca: VXX) leading the pack, with losses of 6 percent amid a daily trading volume that neared 30 million shares.
