ETF Asset Flows Year-To-Date
May 22, 2008
You asked for it Jim, so here it is: ETF asset counts, fund flows and creation activity year-to-date.
The table below lists all of ETF fund providers sorted by total net creation activity in dollars from December 28, 2007, through May 16, 2008.
All I can say about this table is "wow."
First of all, Vanguard has become a big player in the ETF space. With $50 billion in assets and more than $9.2 billion in net creations this year, whatever the company is doing to reach out to advisors and investors on ETFs is working. It is now far and away the third-largest ETF provider, and it's gaining on the leaders.
ProShares comes in a strong second with $8.3 billion in net creations, pushing it to $17.4 billion in total assets. Leverage and inverse funds continue to be a big hit with investors, and this trend shows no sign of slowing down.
The third slot on the list goes to Van Eck, which gets credit for consistently launching smart ETFs that find a place for investors. They've got more winners and fewer duds in their portfolio than most ETF providers.
The MacroShares make an unusual appearance at the No. 4 slot, with a surge in assets reflecting the excitement around the termination of those funds at the end of the month.
On the flip side of the table you have the largest ETF providers, with BGI seeing $2.3 billion in net redemptions and SSgA suffering an incredible $17.2 billion in net redemption activity. Those numbers are skewed, however, by one fund: the S&P 500 SPDR (SPY), which had $23.7 billion in net redemptions this year. Ignore that one fund and the broader SSgA fund family has enjoyed $5.5 billion in net creations-which would be enough to slot it into the top five by net creations.
Very interesting.
