ETF Fund Flows: Almost $1 Billion Out Of IWM, SPY, GLD

Almost $1 billion in combined redemptions from the most widely traded small-cap equity ETF as well as the two biggest U.S. ETFs set the tone in the world of exchange-traded funds on Tuesday, as the stock market eked out gains in a session marked by continued concern about the health of the economy, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.com.

Outflows from the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEArca: IWM) of small-cap stocks topped the redemptions list at $308.9 million. Second on the redemptions list was the biggest U.S. ETF, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca: SPY), which saw $292.9 million in investor money head for the exits. The second-biggest U.S. ETF, the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEArca: GLD) was third, with $231.4 in redemptions.

Overall, net flows amounted to negative $69.5 million, with U.S. equities and especially commodities pacing those outflows. Almost $300 million exited commodities, while $156.8 million worth of U.S. equities was redeemed. International equities added $43 million to the list of redemptions.

On the flip side, the asset class that garnered the most inflows was U.S. fixed income, with $251.5 million in new money. The individual bond ETF that was highest on the creations list was the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond Fund (NYSEArca: HYG), which was the source of almost $78 million in creations. HYG was No. 4 on the creations list.

At the top of IndexUniverse.com’s creations list was the PowerShares QQQ (NYSEArca: QQQQ) of Nasdaq’s biggest 100 companies, which had inflows of $228.5 million. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Real Estate ETF (NYSEArca: IYR) was second, with $215 million in creations, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSEArca: XLE) was third on the list, with $135.6 million in inflows.

Total assets in the 1,014 U.S. ETFs now listed were $808.53 billion, after accounting for the $69 million in net outflows noted above as well as the market’s gains yesterday. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 75.3 on Tuesday, or 0.7 percent, to close at 10,229.96.
