ETF Fund Flows: $445 Million Exits IWM
August 31, 2010
|
Investors yanked a total of $445.8 million out of the small-cap equities Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEArca: IWM) Monday, on a day stocks lost ground amid ongoing concerns that economic growth is stalling out, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.com. Also noteworthy were outflows of $32.3 million from the iShares Barclays TIPS Bond (NYSEArca: TIP), a suggestion that investors are shedding inflation protection as they brace for the possibility of growing deflationary pressures. TIP was fourth on the IndexUniverse.com redemptions list. Second and third on the redemptions list were iShares Barclays Short Treasury Bond (NYSEArca: SHV) and the iShares Russell Mid Cap Growth (NYSEArca: IWP), which saw outflows of $77.2 million and $67.0 million, respectively. Creations Investors plowed $658.3 million into the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca: SPY) yesterday, as the heavily traded ETF again topped the creations list. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEArca: XRT) was second on the inflows list, gathering $293.9 million and nearly tripling assets to $465.3 million. Rounding out the top three was the iShares S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca: IVV), which added $253.7 million in new assets. The Dow Jones industrial average fell yesterday 140.92 points, or 1.4 percent, to 10,009.73 on the lowest trading volume of the year, as investors continued to be swayed by recent weak economic data.
