Global economic concerns continue to overhang equities markets.

International

Asia

  • Asian stock indexes dropped due to increasing tensions between China and Japan and slowing global growth.
  • The Nikkei slid 0.39 percent; KOSPI increased 0.13 percent; Shanghai Composite dropped 0.91 percent; Hang Seng fell 0.27 percent; S&P/ASX 200 eased 0.18 percent.

Europe

  • European stock indexes sunk today after investors believed that increases in stocks over the past few weeks did not reflect improved situations in the eurozone especially regarding the debt crisis. Check for declines in the Vanguard MSCI Europe ETF (NYSEArca: VGK).
  • German investor confidence measured by the ZEW Survey rose to -18.2 in September from -25.5 in August, and had a greater value than the -20 expected by analysts. Part of the increase was due to the ECB's action in purchasing bonds to contain the effects of the debt crisis.

Domestic

  • U.S. stock futures indicated a lower opening due to continued problems in Europe and slower global growth.
