Asia recovers led by tech, energy sectors; Europe mixed; U.S. futures point to higher opening on Spain bailout.

 

International

Asia

  • Asian stock indexes recovered from yesterday's sharp fall led by technology stocks and increased oil prices. The markets returned their attention to central bank stimulus plans.
  • The Nikkei rose 0.25 percent; KOSPI increased 0.6 percent; Shanghai Composite gained 0.09 percent; Hang Seng advanced 0.7 percent; S&P/ASX 200 grew 0.25 percent.

 

Europe

  • European stock indexes were slightly mixed; mining stocks were good performers. Check for movements in the Vanguard MSCI Europe ETF (NYSEArca: VGK).
  • The euro increased 0.4 percent today to $1.3020 at 6:28 a.m. ET, as investors speculate that Spain will receive a bailout plan. Look for advances in the CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSEArca: FXE).

 

Domestic

  • U.S. stock futures indicated a higher opening as investors expect European leaders to develop a bailout for Spain, and as demand for the iPhone 5 advances Apple shares.

Gold Edges Upward and Silver Slips

  • Gold advanced 0.25 percent, or $4.38, to $1772.98. Expect gains in the SPDR Gold Shares physical bullion ETF (NYSEArca: GLD).
  • Silver eased 0.06 percent, or $0.02, to $34.65. Expect modest drops in the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEArca: SLV).

 

WTI and Brent Oil Advance

  • The November contract for WTI crude oil ascended 0.60 percent, or $0.55, to $92.97 per barrel.
  • The November contract for Brent crude oil increased 0.38 percent, or $0.42, to $110.45 per barrel.
  • Look for growth in both the United States Oil Fund (NYSEArca: USO) and in the United States Brent Oil Fund (NYSEArca: BNO).

 

Fund Flows

On Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, the top ETF in nominal inflows was the iShares Barclays TIPS Bond Fund (NYSEArca: TIP), with creations of $206.65 million. The top ETF in nominal outflows was the Financial Select SPDR (NYSEArca: XLF), with redemptions of $311.03 million.
