FlexShares Plans To Provide Own Indexes
Northern Trust’s new family of FlexShares ETFs is looking to jump on a newly popular bandwagon in the ETF industry. According to a recent 40-APP filing, Northern Trust would like to follow in the footsteps of such firms as WisdomTree, IndexIQ and Van Eck and provide the indexes that it its ETFs track. BlackRock has made a similar filing with regard to its iShares family of ETFs.

Global X Files For 'Core' ETFs
Global X, known for its niche sector ETFs, filed paperwork earlier this month on three funds that will track Nasdaq indexes covering “core” portfolio categories. The Global X Nasdaq 500 ETF and Global X Nasdaq Mid Cap 400 ETF will track indexes that cover similar portions of the market as the S&P 500 and S&P MidCap 400 indexes. Meanwhile, the Global X Nasdaq 100 Global Technology ETF will track the Nasdaq OMX Global Technology Index. Each fund will use a sampling strategy. The filing did not include tickers or expense ratios.

iShares To Launch More Target-Date Muni ETFs
A recent filing from iShares offers details on plans to expand its lineup of target-date municipal bond ETFs by two funds. The iShares 2018 S&P AMT-Free Municipal Series and iShares 2019 S&P AMT-Free Series will join six existing ETFs covering the years 2012-2017. Although the filings did not include tickers or expense ratios, the current members of iShares’ “AMT-Free Municipal Series” each charge an annual expense ratio of 0.30 percent.
