USCF Files For ‘Active Index’ Broad Commodity ETF

United States Commodity Funds, known for its exchange-traded funds tied to individual energy commodities has filed registration papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a broad-based commodity ETF. The fund will track the SummerHaven Dynamic Commodity Index, an actively managed diversified commodities index that was created by a firm co-founded by K. Geert Rouwenhorst. Rouwenhorst and Gary Gorton, both Yale University professors, authored a research paper in 2004 that is widely credited with having helped to drive investor attention to commodities as an asset class.

Van Eck Files for LatAm Small-Cap Fund

Van Eck is planning to launch a small-cap Latin America ETF. The related filing said that the fund would track an index provided by Structured Solutions AG that currently covers 75 components, all of which are domiciled in Latin America or derive at least 50 percent of their revenues from their business activities in the region. The ETF would be only the third to cover the broad Latin America region, but the first to track that region’s small-cap segment.

Goldman Sachs Seeks ETF Market Entry

Financial services giant Goldman Sachs has officially thrown its hat into the ETF ring with a recent 40-APP filing. The filing asks for broad relief from the SEC to launch a variety of index-based funds, including equity, fixed-income and blended portfolios. A 40-APP is not a definitive signal that a firm will begin launching ETFs in the near future, but it does seem likely that 2010 could see the first ETFs from Goldman hit the market.
