The Journal of Indexes hosted its annual Editorial Board meeting at the NASDAQ Market Site on Wednesday, June 17. The event brought together the leading figures in the index, index fund and exchange-traded fund industries for a wide-ranging discussion of the biggest issues facing the field.

The session was highlighted by a presentation from Vanguard founder and index industry legend John Bogle, who unveiled new research showing that investors tend to make poor decisions when buying and selling ETFs. (See our news coverage here.)

Prior to the meeting, Bogle hosted a free webinar—presented by IndexUniverse.com—in which he spent an hour reviewing the research and answering audience questions on a variety of topics.

A full contingent of national and trade media attended the open-doors portion of the event, including Fox Business News, which broadcast two live segments from the meeting.

In the first, Fox anchor Dagan McDowell spoke with Jack Bogle about the state of American finance. In the interview, Bogle called for renewed, principles-based financial regulation and hammered home the need for fund management companies to uphold their fiduciary duty to shareholders. He also spoke of Vanguard’s recent (and failed) bid for iShares, as well as his own personal legacy in the money management industry.

In the second interview, Fox’s McDowell spoke with three of the leaders in the ETF industry:

  • Jim Wiandt, editor of Journal of Indexes
  • Jim Ross, senior managing director, State Street Global Advisors
  • Joanne Hill, head of investment strategy, ProFunds Group

The trio discussed the recent merger of BlackRock and iShares, the future of active ETFs and whether leveraged or inverse ETFs are appropriate for retail investors.

The group closed out the day by ringing the closing bell on the NASDAQ National Market.
