In addition to registering two new emerging-markets-linked exchange-traded funds this week, iShares Trust has also filed with the SEC to launch two ETFs tied to the financial sectors of Europe’s and the Far East region’s developed economies. The iShares MSCI Europe Financial Sector Index Fund will track equities in financial institutions similar to those in its underlying index, which as of Sept. 30, included 105 securities in a 15-country region. (Prospectus) The iShares MSCI Far East Financial Sector Index Fund will use a representative sampling strategy to replicate the performance of its underlying index, which comprised 93 securities of banks, financial companies, insurance and real estate companies in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, as of Sept. 30. (Prospectus) Barclays Global Fund Advisors will be both funds’ investment adviser. Although there are global sector ETFs and now emerging market sectors from Emerging Global Advisors, there aren't really many ETFs covering sectors in developed international regions, so the proposed iShares could fill an as-yet-uncharted niche in the market.
