iShares Registers Emerging Markets Sector ETFs

iShares Trust is expanding its roster of exchange-traded funds linked to emerging markets with the registration of two ETFs focused on the region’s financial sector and materials sector.

The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Financial Sector Index Fund will track the MSCI Emerging Markets Financial Sector Index, which, as of Sept. 30, comprised 166 securities of banks, financial companies, insurance and real estate companies in 22 emerging economies.

The fund will use a representative sampling strategy by investing in a selected group of securities that will seek to, collectively, replicate the broader performance of the index.

Its main competition will be newcomer Emerging Global Advisors’ EGS Dow Jones Emerging Markets Financial Titans Index Fund (NYSEArca: EFN). The fund, which was launched mid-September, comprised 26 stocks in some eight countries, as of Sept. 30.

EFN’s biggest exposure was in China, with the country carrying a weighting of 35 percent in the portfolio, followed by Brazil with nearly 25 percent.

EFN has an expense ratio of 0.85 percent.

The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Materials Sector Index Fund will track the MSCI Emerging Markets Materials Sector Index, which comprises stocks in chemical companies, construction materials companies, containers and packaging, metals and mining, and paper and forest products companies. As of Sept. 30, the fund invested in 108 securities in an 18-country span.

The new fund should go head-to-head with another one still in registration: the EGS Dow Jones Emerging Markets Basic Materials Titans Index Fund (NYSEArca: EBM), which will also come to inception with an expense ratio of 0.85 percent.

EBM’s portfolio will replicate the exposure of its leading index, the Dow Jones Emerging Markets Basic Materials Titans Index, which as of Sept. 30, had more than 26 percent of its holdings allocated to Brazil, followed by South Africa, with a weighting of 22 percent. Altogether, the index listed 30 holdings in a 10-country region.
