ETF Snapshot: A Look At August Trends

Snapshot Overview

As of Aug. 31, 755 ETFs in the U.S. — with assets totaling approximately $661BN — were managed by 27 ETF managers.

ETF industry assets rose $20.8BN for the month, or 3.3%.

ETF Industry Detail (August)

ASSET CLASSES — OVERALL

  • The S&P 500® gained 3.6% in August. MSCI EAFE® gained 5.5% for the month in USD terms. The Barclays Capital U.S. Treasury Index rose 0.89% while the Barclays Capital U.S. Aggregate Index gained 1.1%. Gold rose to $955.5 an ounce, a gain of 1.8% from last month's close.
  • Ten of the twelve categories gained assets. The Size category rose the most in absolute terms, up $9.6BN, or 6.0%. For the second month in a row, the Inverse/Leveraged category lost assets, down $2.1BN.
